Sequences in Pairing Problems: A New Approach to Reconcile Stability with Strategy-Proofness for Elementary Matching Problems

چکیده
We study two-sided (“marriage”) and general pairing (“roommate”) problems. We introduce “sequences,” lists of matchings that are repeated in order. Stable sequences are natural extensions of stable matchings; case in point, we show that a sequence of stable matchings is stable. In addition, stable sequences can provide solutions to problems for which stable matchings do not exist. In a sense, they allow us to “balance” the interest of the agents at different matchings. In this way, sequences can be superior to matchings in terms of welfare and fairness. A seminal result due to Roth (1982, Math Oper Res 7(4), 617–628) is that no strategy-proof rule always selects stable matchings. In contrast, we show that there is a weakly group sd– strategy-proof rule that selects stable sequences. We call it the Compromises and Rewards rule, CR. We find that stronger incentive properties are incompatible with much weaker stability properties and vice versa. The CR rule satisfies two fairness axioms: anonymity and sideneutrality. For the general problem, the Generalized CR rule is sd–5-stable (cannot be blocked by groups of five or fewer agents), weakly sd–strategy-proof, and anonymous. In addition, the Extended All-Proposing Deferred Acceptance rule is sd-stable, anonymous, and individually rational at all times on a restricted domain. We provide a condition under which our results still hold if agents have cardinal preferences and compare sequences using “expected utility.”

A New Recursive Formulation for the Mixed Redundancy Strategy in Reliability Optimization Problems
One of the common approaches for improving the reliability of a specific system is to use parallel redundant components in subsystems. This approach, which is known as the redundancy allocation problem (RAP), includes the simultaneous selection of the component type and its level for each subsystem in order to maximize the system reliability.Traditionally, there are two redundancy strategies, n...
متن کاملStrategy-Proofness for Hospitals in Matching Markets
Strategy-proof implementation is one of the many elements that have contributed to the successful application of matching theory in real life. However, in many-to-one matching markets without transfers (e.g., doctors to hospitals with fixed salaries) there is no stable mechanism which is strategy-proof for hospitals. Furthermore, strategy-proofness and stability cannot be achieved for both hosp...
متن کاملCockpit Crew Pairing Problem in Airline Scheduling: Shortest Path with Resources Constraints Approach
Increasing competition in the air transport market has intensified active airlines’ efforts to keep their market share by attaching due importance to cost management aimed at reduced final prices. Crew costs are second only to fuel costs on the cost list of airline companies. So, this paper attempts to investigate the cockpit crew pairing problem. The set partitioning problem has been used for ...
متن کاملAutomated Mechanism Design without Money via Machine Learning
We use statistical machine learning to develop methods for automatically designing mechanisms in domains without money. Our goal is to find a mechanism that best approximates a given target function subject to a design constraint such as strategy-proofness or stability. The proposed approach involves identifying a rich parametrized class of mechanisms that resemble discriminantbased multiclass ...
متن کاملA New Modified Particle Filter With Application in Target Tracking
The particle filter (PF) is a novel technique that has sufficiently good estimation results for the nonlinear/non-Gaussian systems. However, PF is inconsistent that caused mainly by loss of particle diversity in resampling step and unknown a priori knowledge of the noise statistics. This paper introduces a new modified particle filter called adaptive unscented particle filter (AUPF) to overcome th...
